Meager rain chance east of Tucson Friday

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Remember that late week rain chance I was skeptical about? The above image is the model output by 5 PM Friday…the blue blotches in New Mexico & barely Eastern Arizona indicate rain. Bear in mind that a few days prior, the models had this precip as far west as Tucson.
This is a perfect example of [...]

Sunday’s Winds, Monday’s Cool Temps & A Late Week Rain Chance?

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

As promised, it was rather windy today. Peak wind gusts played out like this…no surprise the strongest wind gust was atop Mt. Lemmon. The 59 mph wind gust in Sierra Vista was eyebrow-raising though. Keep in mind, the wind criteria for a severe thunderstorm is 58 mph. It goes to show you don’t need a [...]

Strong Winds & High Fire Danger Sunday

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Sunday will feature some of the strongest winds we’ve seen this spring. A cold front will approach from California, which will be the culprit for the blustery conditions. For that reason, a Wind Advisory & Red Flag Warning is out for all of Southeastern Arizona. These advisories will be in effect from noon until 8 [...]

Here’s a look at the Fraguita Fire that continues to burn south of Arivaca…big thanks to News 4 viewer Paula Gieb who snapped this yesterday. That would be Fraguita Peak above, with the flames & smoke on the southeast slope of the peak.

This fire has grown from 25 acres to over 250 in a matter of hours, thanks to upslope winds fanning the flames. On top [...]

An Outstanding Forecast & My Favorite Forecasting Tool

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Did you like Saturday’s weather? Chances are you’ll love Sunday’s too…these daytime highs will be acompanied by abundant sunshine and a 10 to 15 mph breeze out of the southwest. We should be around 90 this time of year, so we’ll be a little above average.

This week looks flawless too, as a storm will pass [...]

Wednesday’s Southern Arizona Highs & More Midwest Storms

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

What you are looking at is daytime highs Wednesday that are 10 to 12 degrees below average for mid-May. What you’ll likely notice is less wind for Southern Arizona, as our cold front has passed to the east…

…and into the Midwest, setting the stage for another round of severe storms Wednesday. The Storm Prediction Center [...]
